Intergenerational Trauma Coordinator (ITC)

JOB SUMMARY:

The Intergenerational Trauma Coordinator (ITC) is responsible for designing, developing, coordinating, facilitating, and monitoring program deliverables with community needs and interests. To ensure that the intergenerational traumas caused by Indian Residential Schools are addressed through strengths-based approaches to achieve and maintain a good mind while promoting healthy lifestyles, improving individual and family emotional well-being, and providing access to cultural knowledge and activities that foster self-respect and identity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinates with the Indigenous Wholistic Mental Wellness Coordinator, and other Friendship Centre staff and Indigenous organisations to promote a coordinated approach to healing and wellness services.
  • Participates in priority-setting at external committees and coalitions relevant to addressing intergenerational traumas.
  • Improves service system pathways relevant to intergenerational trauma, mental health and addictions for urban Indigenous individuals and families.
  • Promote the development of protocols and referral agreements with urban Indigenous organizations, mainstream health and social service agencies, Indigenous traditional health practitioners, and other relevant community partners and stakeholders as it pertains to the needs of the urban Indigenous community.
  • Improves awareness and understanding across communities of Indigenous cultural values and historical context, especially as relates to intergenerational trauma or other factors that impact mental health and addictions.
  • Promotes awareness and ensures access to the program through a variety of outreach efforts and promotional activities.
  • Conducts peer counselling, i.e., providing support, encouragement, and resource information for urban Indigenous individuals and their families.
  • Conducts client intakes and identifies traumas, mental health, addictions, and other related needs.
  • Responds to client social emergencies and provides crisis interventions.
  • Provides wrap-around services and strengths-based action plans for Indigenous community members, ex. healing, wellness, addictions free activities, positive parenting, family interaction and cultural awareness.
  • Coordinates the development of healing circles, peer support groups and self-help processes to assist in community healing, anger management, positive self-image development, alternative discipline methods and positive relationships.
  • Offers land-based activities, opportunities for transmission of cultural knowledge, and connections to Elders and traditional knowledge holders to support cultural healing and positive self-identity.
  • Assist Elders and Healers during One-to-one days On-Site. Ensure that safety protocols are maintained between clients.
  • Accurately reports and ensures all program objectives are being met in accordance with agreements.
  • Utilizes quarterly reporting tools and database (if applicable) to input all data as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The candidate will possess post-secondary education in mental health or addictions, Indigenous studies, social work, child and youth work or combination of the equivalent and relevant education.
  • The candidate will have a minimum of three (3) years of demonstrated and related work experience with health and social services and Indigenous cultural approaches to mental health and addictions issues.
  • The candidate will have strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with particular emphasis on the impacts of trauma, family violence, Indigenous youth engagement and community outreach. Knowledge of an Indigenous language(s) will be considered an asset.
  • The candidate will have a proven ability to organize, evaluate, communicate, and present information, both verbally and written.
  • Must have a passion for and be willing to role model healthy behaviours.
  • Must have experience in program planning, development, implementation, data collection and evaluation; strong facilitation skills and experience presenting educational workshops and working with groups.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, including database applications.
  • Self-motivated individual with the ability to work with minimal supervision in a team-oriented setting; ability to problem solve and take the initiative.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent case and file management skills, stress management and time management skills.
  • Ability to engage people to build trust and rapport; effective verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and/or weekends.
  • A clear criminal reference check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Clearance will be a condition of employment.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The ITC shall have responsibility for the following:

  1. Case and File Management:
  • Develop and maintain current, accurate, confidential participant files that reflect assessment, services, and outcomes.
  • Complete intake process with clients.
  • Be knowledgeable of and work with community agencies and referral sources who will be in a position to assist clients in meeting immediate and long-term goals.
  • Initiate and participate in case conferences as necessary to ensure client needs are met.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients and provide ongoing liaison services and follow-up to ensure individual needs are being met.
  • Schedule visits with clients and follow through with case management.
  • Develop annual service plans.
  • Work with Friendship Centre programs to promote a coordinated client service approach to ensure client needs are addressed.
  • Strives to improve results by developing skills and increasing knowledge relevant to the job.
  • Ensures work is completed in a way that is conscientious of the organization’s resources.
  • Creates or maintains processes that ensure all relevant information or tools are easily accessible.
  • Has the ability to use sound reasoning when faced with various issues, and to make quick, effective decisions.
  • Has the ability to develop, adhere to and be accountable to a work plan.
  1. Participant-Based Service Delivery:
    • Facilitate programming and teaching activities.
    • Establish and maintain strong relationships with participants involved in the program.
    • Model behaviour in a manner that serves as an example of positive cultural values, attitudes, beliefs, and actions as they pertain to mental health.
    • Engage participants and provide support in achieving mental health goals.
    • Advocate and provide one-to-one or group informal counselling service.
    • Facilitate the involvement of Elders and traditional people into the ITC program.
    • Prepare for traditional items and medicines needed in preparation for clients.
    • Ensure participants are supervised at all times.
  1. Program Delivery:
  • Plan agendas, secure necessary resources, organize and deliver programming and special activities as per the annual service plan.
  • Plan, organize, supervise, assess and facilitate ITC programs and activities.
  • Ensure that all programs and activities are facilitated to meet health and safety standards.
  • Prepare and provide nutritious meals and snacks, resources, and activities relevant to programs. (When Public Health Measures due to Covid Permit)
  • Incorporate teachings and learning activities to enable program participants to make informed choices.
  • Acquire, maintain and care for education tools/resources i.e., books, medicines, sweat lodge, etc.
  • Arrange for transportation to programming as required and maintain mileage records.
  • Identify gaps and needs to deliver educational workshops and presentations.
  • Participate in meetings with organizations related to program delivery.
  • Evaluate program activities by developing and utilizing participant evaluation forms and/or any other evaluation tools or methods deemed necessary.
  • Work within a specific budget and deliver programming accordingly.
  • Work collaboratively with Friendship Centre staff in support of the development of ITC work plans that best support program and service design and provision for the urban Indigenous community.
  • Work with local stakeholders within non-Indigenous community service organizations and institutions to promote cultural competency and awareness within an Intergenerational trauma framework.
  • Ensure Criminal Background Checks and vulnerable sector screening are secured and assessed for individuals volunteering and facilitating in the program.
  • Provide opportunities for leadership development with participants.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and facilitation of new and relevant cultural services/programs within the Friendship Centre.

 

  1. Program Administration:
  • Submit written reports to the Executive Director outlining programming activities, committee work, Friendship Centre activities, and other reports as required.
  • Compile and submit statistical data using designation database systems.
  • Accurately record statistical information as required and as it changes.
  • Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date client files and systems that are essential components of good program management, which demonstrate the program is being delivered according to the proposed work mandate and work plan.
  • Respond to correspondence and information requests as required.
  • Attend TIN Annual General Meeting.
  • Complete internal administrative tasks i.e. timesheets, mileage logs, personal expense reports, etc.
  • Participate in program evaluations and any other specially designed processes that may be undertaken to assess the effectiveness of the ITC program.
  1. Community Development & Outreach:
  • Work with Friendship Centre staff in support of the development of culture-based work plans that best support program and service design and provision for the urban Indigenous community.
  • Attend, participate, and/or facilitate relevant meetings, conferences, or workshops as a representative of TIN.
  • Consult with the community to determine ITC program needs and interests.
  • Respond to general enquiries of the ITC purpose, processes and procedures and/or any other information being requested.
  • Provide insight and support in the development of protocols and agreements with internal and external stakeholders as directed.
  • Participate as a resource person at training sessions, committee meetings, etc., to ensure that information on culture, needs, concerns and aspirations of Indigenous people are expressed.
  • Develop promotional material that advertises services and upcoming events.
  • Establish and maintain relationships and partnerships with local community agencies/organizations.
  1. Training and Professional Development:
  • Participate in relevant conferences, training workshops and related courses and meetings for professional development as required or directed.
  • Attend workshops, staff meetings, etc. as directed.
  • Keep apprised of relevant legislation or policy changes in relation to the social services fields.
  • Identify professional development/training needs and bring to the attention of the Executive Director.
  1. Health and Safety:
  • Observe health, fire and safety regulations; uphold health and safety standards.
  • Ensure that the Occupational Health and Safety policies incorporated into daily working practices are adhered to.
  • Maintain Standard First Aid Level C with AED certification.
  1. General Duties:
  • Perform other duties relevant to the program as assigned by the Executive Director
  • Observe and uphold the policies, procedures, and practices of The Indigenous Network Friendship Centre.
  • Actively provide supervision to volunteers.
  • Ensure client files are secured in a locked filing cabinet on a daily basis.
  • Actively promote and participate in community and TIN annual activities in keeping with the

mandate and philosophy of the Friendship Centre.

  • Work with other members of the team to ensure a wholistic program of care is maintained addressing the physical, psychological, and social needs of the service users.
  • Ensure the premises and program resources are safe and secure.
  • Work within an Indigenous culturally competent framework.
  • Notify the Executive Director or designate immediately of any difficulties including crisis or any other issues that may affect the ongoing delivery of the program.
  • Demonstrate professional standards of conduct at all times.
  • Respect all within the organization in compliance with the Lateral Violence Policy and Code of Conduct.
